Hey guys

I thought I would let you know about a fantastic unsigned band from Sheffield called Firegarden...

I saw them in a small pub in Horncastle last night.  The inevitable satuday night crowd, bikers, old and young came to witness the boogie lords at play.   If you love classic rock and prog rock then this is the band for you.  Some classic covers (Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Free etc) and some of their own material which is a clever blend of classic and modern.

By the end of the night everyone was dancing, even the little old lady who comes to see them everytime (it may be because she thinks the drummer has a sexy body...) played air guitar with the lead singer/bass player.  It was an electric night.  The energy of the band flowed through the audience, I always think when the band has fun so does the audience.

The gig will shortly be up on youtube, but for those that are interested please visit their myspace, website or come to a gig.  They will be playing in Sheffield again on 1st August 2008 at the Grapes on Trippet lane, be good to see you there.

During my time at Rockworld TV, I have come across many bands, it has really opened my eyes, to the wealth of Musical Talent that is out there.

One of my current favorites, and I think a band that will be a favorite for a long time to come is Finnish band Turisas : Turisas Website.

When I first saw them, they were part of the "Get In The Ring" battle of the bands competition run by Metal Hammer Magazine, Rockworld TV and XFM. My first impressions? WTF?? why are they dressed as vikings? This is somekinda lame promotional stunt!

However having heard their  cover of Boney M's Rasputin (yep.. I did say Boney M's Rasputin!) I came to the conclusion that they are not taking themselves to seriously, and that track and its accompanying video is absolutely stunning.

The album "The Varangian Way" shows another side to Turisas, it shows that these guys are obviously very passionate about their Nordic Heritage.

Ok I'll tell you now that "The Varangian Way" is a concept album. Now I'm quite fond of the odd concept album, "War Of The Worlds" being a particular favorite. However, Concept albums seem to swing between being absolute classics, and utter utter drivel " The Varangian Way" fall's for me well and truly into the "Absolute Classic" category, The album has a feel and atmosphere that truly transports you to the time and place, listening through headphones on my iPod, you can really imagine the cold, the fear, the misery the waiting the very feeling of being part of a Viking Horde on a major quest.

If you get a chance to check out this awesome album, or in fact anything by this fabulous band, then do, you will NOT be disappointed.

ITS LIKE FREEBORN JOHN... BUT HARDER AND WITH WITH VIKINGS
